LENS FAQs

What is LENS?

Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS) is a unique type of neurofeedback that allows to brain to reset itself for optimal performance.

How effective is LENS?

The success rate is remarkable. Over 85% of clients benefit significantly, often dramatically. And the changes are enduring. Once enough sessions have been completed (typically 15-20), for most people treatment is done. There is no need to receive LENS on an ongoing basis.

How does LENS work?

Information from the brain is fed back to the brain in the form of a tiny signal for a fraction of a second. The strength of this signal is far less than a cell phone. This signal causes a tiny fluctuation in brainwave patterns that permit dysfunctional brain patterns to correct themselves. LENS is like pushing the re-start button on your brain, returning it to its original, healthy state.

Is LENS safe?

LENS is extremely safe. In over 75,000 clients treated with LENS, there has not been a single reported case of someone being worse off from having been treated with LENS.

Why is LENS unique?

In traditional neurofeedback, information from your brainwaves is transmitted to a computer screen. Clients attempt to train their brainwaves by making certain effects happen on the screen. No signal is transmitted back to the brain. This kind of neurofeedback typically requires 40+ sessions to see changes, with a typical session lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

With LENS neurofeedback clients don’t do anything other than sit still for a few moments. A brief, tiny signal transmitted feeding back to the brain does all the work. And unlike traditional neurofeedback clients, LENS clients generally notice changes either immediately or within the first few sessions. Fast action, limited number of sessions, and the ease and simplicity of treatment all distinguish LENS from traditional neurofeedback.

How long has LENS been around? Is it experimental?

LENS has been used by practitioners for over 15 years and has grown to 500 practitioners internationally. LENS is not experimental. Over 75,000 patients have been treated with LENS. And the number grows daily.

Are there side effects?

After their first few LENS sessions, a client might experience temporary fatigue, “spacey-ness” or slightly “wired”. Headaches also sometimes occur. These symptoms are temporary, usually lasting only a few hours.

Who can benefit from LENS?

LENS can help you if you face challenges in many areas, including:

Anxiety

LENS is exceptionally effective at reducing of anxiety. Ninety percent of clients begin to experience improvement in the first or second session. LENS also improves resilience, the ability to handle stress, and helps create a sense of calm in difficult situations.

Depression

LENS helps lift depression—sometimes even when it has been resistant to other treatments. Energy and motivation can also increase and a client may once again experience a positive sense of health and well being.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

In mild and moderate TBI, clarity, concentration, memory, multi-tasking and energy consistently and rapidly improve.

ADD/ADHD

LENS decreases impulsivity, distractibility and hyperactivity. The world becomes easier to navigate. Life becomes less of a struggle.

Substance Abuse

Because LENS is so effective at treating anxiety, depression and poor impulse control, it can be tremendously helpful for people withdrawing from and working at staying away from addictive substances.

Autism, Aspergers, OCD, Hair Pulling, Eating Disorders

Again, because LENS is so effective at treating anxiety, depression and poor impulse control, there is often dramatic improvement in a variety of disorders where these symptoms are present.

Will my insurance cover LENS sessions?

LENS is often reimbursed as a form of biofeedback for certain diagnoses. You should check with your carrier. We will provide you with a “super bill” which you can submit.

Do you work with children?

Yes. A large part of my practice is devoted to children, adolescents, and teens.

Does LENS affect only negative patterns? Will it change my positive qualities?

Not at all. Only frozen, stuck patterns are affected. Healthy brainwave patterns are flexible and resilient. When there is a tiny fluctuation they automatically spring back to that healthy state.

How many sessions are required before noticing an improvement?

Most people notice an initial change within 3 sessions, occasionally a little longer. The average number of sessions for most problems is 15 to 20. Once treatment has been completed, additional sessions are usually not necessary. Occasionally someone needs a “booster”.

Do I have to stop my medication to do LENS?

No. Medication does not diminish the effectiveness of LENS. There is no need to stop or reduce your medication, which should only be done in conjunction with your healthcare provider.

What if I do not live near a LENS provider?

Clients sometimes come from out of town and stay for 1-2 weeks. They receive daily treatments and generally experience very rapid changes.

How can I learn more about LENS?

Suggested readings are The Healing Power of Neurofeedback by Stephen Larsen, which is specifically about LENS, and A Symphony in the Brain by Jim Robbins, which provides a broad overview of the neurofeedback.
